You will be inspired, educated, and connected after an engaging overview of NVMM’s impact and hear about the exciting initiatives planned for the future.

Women’s Only Jiu Jitsu Open Mat

Join us at the Museum for our Women’s Only Jiu Jitsu Open Mat class. This class is open to all women interested in participating in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class that focuses on self-defense and preparedness.

Black Hawk Down: 30 Years Later

October 4 | 6 p.m.

Join us on the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, for an unforgettable evening with three members of Task Force Ranger, who will share their accounts of events leading up to and during the momentous firefight with Mohammad Farah Aidid’s militia. These events are described in “Black Hawk Down,” an acclaimed Ridley Scott film based on the book by Mark Bowden.

We’re heading back to the stables for this month’s Rally Point. Stockhands Horses for Healing, a Delaware, Ohio, Veteran Service Organization, shared the benefits of the equine experience including how working with horses provides mental and emotional calm, physical freedom and purpose among Veterans and civilians alike.

October is a month with several celebrations for the U.S. Navy including its birthday on October 13 and Navy Day on October 27. To better understand the experience of those who served in the U.S. Navy, we reviewed the Navy Core Values and are reading Stuck by Oliver Jeffers.

October 3-4: Battle of Mogadishu

The Battle of Mogadishu, also known as the incident “Black Hawk Down,” was part of Operation Gothic Serpent. The battle was fought Between October 3-4, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, between the U.S. and Somali militiamen who were supporters of Mohamed Farrah Aidid. This battle was the longest sustained firefight by U.S. forces since the Vietnam War. We honor and remember the 19 American special operators, Rangers, and soldiers who lost their lives and the 73 who were wounded.

October 9: Indigenous People’s Day

We celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day by honoring the strength and fortitude of all Indigenous people, past, present and generations to come.

October 13: U.S. Navy Birthday

The U.S. Navy was established by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 and was first called the Continental Navy. The first ships of the Continental Navy were the USS Providence and the USS Wasp. After the American Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy was disbanded until the Naval Act of 1794, which created a permanent U.S. Navy. October 13, 1775, formally became known as the birthday of the Navy in 1972 by the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt.

October 26: Day of the Deployed

Did you know that 160,000-180,000 American troops are deployed around the world at any given time? On National Day of the Deployed, join us in recognizing the sacrifices of our nation’s deployed troops and their families.

October 27: Navy Day

Navy Day was sponsored by the Navy League in 1922. The Navy League of New York proposed that the official observance be on October 27th in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday. This date was selected because of Roosevelt’s service in the Navy. In 1897, President McKinley appointed Theodore Roosevelt where he served as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Navy Day is designed to give recognition to the naval service.  

October 27: NVMM’s 5th Birthday

The National Veterans Memorial and Museum opened to the public in Columbus, Ohio. Designated by the U.S. Congress as the 20th national Museum in the nation, we are the ONLY Museum to honor ALL Veterans from ALL branches of service. General Colin L. Powell was selected as the Museum’s first honorary chair of the board.

October 27: National First Responder’s Day

A day to honor the heroic acts of the men and women who are first on the scene of an emergency.
