“She is someone that you need to tell people about.” – Marty Skovlund, Jr.

Marty Skovlund, Jr. and Shannon Kent’s husband, Joe Kent, co-wrote “Send Me: The True Story of a Mother at War” to honor Shannon and share the truth about the challenges and triumphs of Shannon’s life as a woman in the military, cancer survivor, mother of two boys, and so much more. The NVMM was proud to host a discussion between Marty and Michael Jerome Plunkett, executive director of The Literature of War Foundation, on August 9 in which Marty shared his motivation for writing this story and the inspiration that comes from learning about Shannon’s service to her country and determination to succeed in all aspects of her life.

Shannon’s story is a story of firsts that took Marty five years to research and write. The author compiles interviews with Shannon’s family, friends, and fellow service members alongside historical research of the role of military intelligence officers in the Global War on Terror.

We highly recommend checking out this book to learn more about not just the remarkable life of Shannon Kent, but to gain a deeper understanding of women’s significant contributions to the Global War on Terror, the sacrifices of a military family, and what military service is like in the 21st century.
