Bailey Elementary students in front of their projects.

At the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM), many school and youth groups come through our doors on field trips, many of which return year after year to bring new students in to expand their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the unique experiences of our nation’s Veterans. One such group comes from the fifth grade of Bailey Elementary in Dublin, Ohio, who visited us again this past December after completing a military-related research project. As part of their field trip, we provided a guided tour along with time to explore the museum on their own. However, this year, they had a surprise – beyond coming to learn, they came to share their knowledge with us!

Prior to their visit, the NVMM was contacted about displaying student research projects completed by cognitively gifted fifth grade students at the school. Each student selected either a women’s military organization or a woman Veteran to research as they learned about the significant contributions of women to the United States military throughout history. Following the completion of their work, students created three display boards organized in a timeline format and brought these displays on the day of their field trip.

“The tour of the NVMM made me realize how much time veterans put into protecting us. Learning about women in the military through my experience was very astonishing.” – Gabby

The following weekend, many students returned to share their research with family members and museum visitors. Students learned about all aspects of the military throughout their independent research projects and were excited to share their research with a wider audience. Their final curated exhibit was on display at the NVMM for the month of December so more families and friends could see their work over the school’s winter break.

“I had so much fun! I enjoyed getting to show our work at the museum. It was a really special experience to show our work to veterans.” – Kaylin

As a bonus, these students were some of the first to engage with our new Service in Action Nook. In partnership with the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and thanks to funding from Nationwide, the Service in Action Nook bridges storytelling and action, empowering participants to learn from Veterans’ stories, reflect on the meaning of service, and take measurable steps that strengthen civic connection and community well-being. The dedicated space celebrates service in all its forms, from military to community action. This interactive area invites visitors of all ages to discover, create, and be inspired to make a difference. While in the museum, students wrote thank you letters for Veterans. These letters are delivered to U.S. Veterans around the state and country to remind them that they are still being thought of long after they are discharged.

We at the NVMM are proud of the work produced and glad to be the place for inquisitive minds to thrive. We thank the students, staff, and families of Bailey Elementary for their time and efforts.
