Author and Illustrator: Duncan Tonatiuh

Soldier for Equality: José de la Luz Sáenz and the Great War by Duncan Tonatiuh tells the true story of José de la Luz Sáenz, a Mexican American teacher and soldier who served in World War I. Despite facing discrimination both in and out of the military, Luz remained committed to justice and equality. After returning from war, he became one of the founders of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), an organization dedicated to fighting for civil rights and better opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through Duncan Tonatiuh’s signature artwork and storytelling, readers learn not only about Luz’s bravery during the war but also his lasting impact on the fight for equality in the United States.

This story is especially meaningful to reflect on during National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15), a time set aside to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Luz’s legacy reminds us that Hispanic Americans have long played a vital role in shaping our nation on the battlefield, in classrooms, and in the ongoing pursuit of justice. His story encourages readers to recognize and celebrate the resilience and leadership of Hispanic communities throughout history and today.
