October is a month with several celebrations for the U.S. Navy including its birthday on October 13 and Navy Day on October 27. To better understand the experience of those who served in the U.S. Navy, we reviewed the Navy Core Values and are reading Stuck by Oliver Jeffers. One of the values for those in the Navy and the Marine Corps is to have the courage to overcome all challenges. Stuck tells the story of Floyd and how he overcomes challenges as he tries to get his kite down from a tree. Much like the members of the Naval Service, and all who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces, Floyd is determined and inventive and he keeps trying no matter the obstacle. Stuck shows us the importance of resilience both when serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and in our everyday lives.

Extend Your Learning:

Check out the Navy Core Values Charter and think about which of these values you use in your everyday life.
Can you think of a time when you faced a difficult situation? How did you handle it?
Why do you think Floyd was so determined to get his kite out of the tree?
What item that Floyd threw into the tree do you think was the most inventive? Which item was the silliest?

Use this worksheet to think about difficult situations you have faced and put them in the tree like in Stuck. Next, reflect on how you overcame that challenge and got the problem out of the tree.
