As the season transitions from summer to fall, September brings with it a special time for remembrance and reflection. We recognize National Suicide Prevention Month, and honor the sacrifices of our nation’s service members.

WELLNESS WEEKEND

Warriors at Ease Training

September 22-24

The Warriors at Ease Level Two training provides three days of in-person, hands-on experience in how to teach adaptive yoga and trauma-informed meditation and mindfulness practices to the military community. Lectures are interwoven through hours of hands-on practice labs that address the most common physical and invisible injuries seen in service, including anxiety, depression, hearing loss, back pain, and loss of limb.

Jiu Jitsu Seminar with The Legion Project

September 23 | 9 a.m. | Free

Join us for a free Jiu Jitsu Seminar with The Legion Project, a non-profit organization whose goal is to use Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a vehicle to deal with some of the negative effects of PTSD, depression, Anxiety, etc.

This seminar is free for attendees, but registration is required. We believe in having a welcoming and safe learning environment for all levels of experience; Beginners to advanced individuals are welcome.

Sweat Like A Mother (SLAM) Workout

September 24 | 9:30 a.m. | Free

Join us for an invigorating and inclusive outdoor workout designed for all fitness levels with additional expertise for pre and post-natal moms. This 45-minute bodyweight workout is led by Natalia Gusching, a certified personal trainer in pregnancy & postpartum athleticism. You can expect a warm up, 2 – 3 stations of cardio/bodyweight strength circuits/core work, and a cool down.

Women’s Only Jiu Jitsu Open Mat

September 24 | 11 a.m. | Free

Join us at the Museum for our Women’s Only Jiu Jitsu Open Mat class. This class is open to all women interested in participating in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class that focuses on self-defense and preparedness.

An Evening with Authors Nick Laidlaw and Andrew Biggio: Oral History in the Age of Social Media

September 7 | 6 p.m.

Join the NVMM and Patrol Base Abbate for a thought-provoking conversation with authors and U.S. Marine Corps Veterans Andrew Biggio and Nick Laidlaw as they discuss their books, “The Rifle 2: Back to the Battlefield” and “What War Did To Us: Ukraine.” They will discuss their experiences of documenting the human experience of combat and war by using social media and historic artifacts.

Journaling Workshop: Curating Your Story with Dead Reckoning Collective

September 8 | 4 p.m.

Join us for an afternoon creating your own visual journal with Dead Reckoning Collective, a Veteran owned and operated publishing company whose mission encourages literacy as a component of a positive lifestyle. Led by instructor Jessica Danger, we’ll craft and curate our own stories using prompts, journaling, drawings, sketches, doodles, cut-outs and photographs.

Modern Warrior LIVE

September 10 | 7 p.m.

Modern Warrior LIVE is an immersive music and narrative experience that chronicles the story of US Army Veteran Jaymes Poling and his journey through three deployments in Afghanistan and subsequent transition back home. This production shares a personal and emotional journey of the challenges of military service and the experience Veterans face when they return home, and it is a catalyst for meaningful conversation about mental health.

Patriot Day Ceremony + Free Admission

Join us at the Museum or online on Monday, September 11, for our Patriot Day Ceremony. We will honor all those who lost their lives, the first responders who rescued many and refused to leave anyone behind and the Veterans who served again on that fateful day 22 years ago.

Veteran Employee Resource Group (VERG) Summit

September 14 & 15

The VERG Summit provides understanding of how military service contributes to successful business cultures by bridging the gap between Veterans and the civilian workforce. This event will demonstrate the importance of creating an inclusive business environment that highlights Veterans in organizations while introducing ways to leverage their talent for business success and retention.

September 10: World Suicide Prevention Day

We all have a role to play in listening, connecting and reaching out to those who may be struggling with challenges. By talking about mental health and suicide, it not only helps reduce stigma and increase awareness, but it also has the potential to save a life.

September 11: Patriot Day

We honor the brave first responders who showed extraordinary courage, and our nation’s service members who served in the following Global War on Terror.

September 15: National POW/MIA Recognition Day

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we pay tribute to the lives and contributions of more than 80,000 Americans who are still listed as Prisoners of War or Missing in Action.

September 18: U.S. Air Force Birthday

This date recognizes the date of the passage of the National Security Act of 1947, which helped establish the United States Air Force as a separate branch of military service. The total strength of the Air Force, including Guard and Reserve troops, is just over half a million people.

September 24: Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day

On September 25, 2022, the nation observes Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, honoring surviving mothers and families of fallen service members. These mothers and families have experienced the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, and we extend our deepest condolences and gratitude.

September 29: Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Day)

The organization that would become the Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW was established in 1899 by a group of Veterans from the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. It is the nation’s oldest major war Veterans’ organization. For the past 120 years, the VFW has honored military service, ensured the care of Veterans and their families, promoted patriotism, and served their communities with unwavering dedication.
